Manila streets: Losing the virtues of hard work and thrift

There’s an area in Manila between Espana Boulevard and R. Magsaysay Avenue that has as its names virtues in Spanish. Too bad, we are in peril of losing them as some of the names have been changed. We have just lost the virtues of Trabajo (hard work) and Economia (thrift) to Vicente G. Cruz and Manuel dela Fuente, respectively. These must be respectable people, but there’s not even a wikipedia entry about them, so I can’t say who they really are.

Fortunately, the following virtues are still to be found: Constancia (constancy), Pureza (purity), Honradez (honor), Verdad (truth), Sobriedad (sobriety). Let’s see how long we can keep these virtues. It’s probably a reflection of how much society is keen on seeing these virtues, if not lived, at least seen in the streets.

  1. I don’t usually comment sa blogs ng ibang tao, lalo na kung di ko kilala but this blog you wrote… it spoke to me.

Insightful nga… I don’t think I would ever have questioned the changing of the names of those streets. But you’re right. The loss of those Spanish named streets are a metaphor to the slow deterioration of our country… our society… our families…

Thanks for speaking, rather, for writing so “eloquently.” 🙂
